Community Missions

Redeemer is very involved in many projects throughout the year, everything from collecting food for the hungry at Thanksgiving, or filling an Angel Tree with names of needy men, women and children, who without our support would get nothing for Christmas.  Each year we add several new things and encourage you to follow your announcements and newsletters to keep up with our Community Outreach.

Each of these ministries reaches out to help others; while at the same time allows us to witness the love and salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Many opportunities exist for layperson involvement in these and other Social Ministries.

Social Ministry at Redeemer is integrated throughout parish life. In the Gospel of Matthew, we are reminded by Jesus that our faith will be evident in how we care for the least among us. We try to touch many with the blessings that God has showered upon us, for, to whom much is given, much is expected. We believe that God expects much from us.

Social Ministry is best defined as Christian care to those inside and outside the congregation that are in physical or emotional need. Redeemer is addressing its current and expanded social ministry through a two-tier organization; taking direction from a Redeemer Staff member, but led by a congregation layperson.

Members are encouraged to apply their talents and skills by contacting the lay leader for a particular ministry or Pastor Schlak at 248-644-4010 ext. 119.

CAMP RESTORE

Camp Restore Detroit is an urban mission located at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Northeast Detroit. Following the successful formula of RAI ministries in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Camp Restore hosts mission groups, close to home and from across the nation, to work with area non-profits in order to assist residents in restoring their faith, their homes and their communities. Redeemer mission trips to New Orleans and Baton Rouge stayed at Camp Restore in these locations – in fact we built our own beds on our first trip in 2007. Campers in Detroit will have the opportunity to work with local Detroiters across a range of community-led volunteer projects, while experiencing the food, music and history Detroit has to offer. The Reverend John Carrier, Pastor of Mt. Calvary explained it this way: “The neighborhood we serve is 75% unoccupied parcels. . . . But that means we are 25% occupied homes. Many of these homeowners feel abandoned by their community… Our neighbors need to see Jesus’ presence for them in us! I am called to ‘Go’ so I need to go where I can make a difference for Jesus in someone’s life. Here I can clearly make a difference for Jesus.” Serving dinner to the camper-volunteers could be just the first of many opportunities for Redeemer to help out at Camp Restore – and the real blessing may be that we wouldn’t be 1800 miles away and we could go home to our own beds at night.  WATCH this awesome Video on Camp Restore!
